Title:  Give way to buses exiting
Closing Date: 14/02/2008

As a motorist, what will make you give way to buses exiting from bus stops/ bays?

Whilst I for this scheme as it promotes civic mindedness, I would hope that the LTA puts more consideration into the bus stops that participate in this scheme. For example, the bus stop nearest the junction of Bt Batok Ave 3 and Ave 4 is definately not ideal. Vehicals turning out of Bt Batok ave 4 are exiting out of a relative complex junction with many pedestrians coupled with fast on coming traffic. As such, the drivers focus coming out of the filter would be concentrating on oncoming traffice from ave 3. And behold, the moment he or she exits, there is a big give way to bus triangle waiting. I'v noticed people hitting on the brakes the moment they exit and screeching brakes follow with near misses from getting their back bumped by the car behind. Thus I do hope that the relevant authorities can re-consider the placement of these schemes as in this instance, in my opinion, may cause more harm and further congestion.

I was actually surprised to learn that as a developed nation, now only Singapore prepares to introduce this regulation. I was under the impression that this has long been gazetted in traffic law here.

I relocated to Singapore a year ago and has been a happy bus rider since, before that I had been alternately driving and riding bus in Australia. Over there, everybody gives way to bus pulling out to join the traffic. It's already a norm. I didn't find it of great inconvenience. Even without the penalty (3 demerit points out of 12 allowed a year, http://www.transport.tas.gov.au/licence_information_folder/loss_of_entitlement_to_drive_-_demerit_points ) I am willing to give way, a few seconds of my time effectively save minutes considering the number the passangers in the bus.

Be more considerate, Singaporeans. Don't be so narrow minded or kia su as some readers citing bus driver as bully. What's it in for bus drivers to bully car drivers? They just do their job to ferry passangers to destinations.

Albeit late I laud LTA to initiate this and even better introduce law to demerit 6 points (to equate severity of the penalty in Australia). Don't even worry about yellow lines or boxes alongside bus stop. Just make it law that bus has the right of way to exiting bus. This will greatly improve the efficiency and ride comfort of the already excellent bus service here.

    My two cents.

I would say that this is part of a bigger problem which all motorist are facing. If LTA were to conduct some "live" study on the behaviors of Spore drivers they will probably notice that many drivers do not give way at all (be it to buses, cars, motorbikes or pedestrian)no matter what the circumstances are.

I 'm sure the authorities would have heard by now how bad the situation has become. Complaints of road hogging, tail gating, reckless driving are part and parcel of driving these days and it is no coincidence that accidents are increasing year on year.

To get drivers to give way to buses, the authorities should first change the mindset of drivers in Singapore. They should drive in a considerate and safe manner and not drive like they are rushing to meet their death.

This can be done thru education and more importantly more traffic enforecement by the traffic police on bad driving habits and incosiderate drivers. Only thru a combined effort between LTA and the traffic police and this issue be resolved.

There is no point in setting up more and more bus lanes as it will result in more congestion on the roads and make people more reluctant to give way to buses. (why give way to buses when they have their own lane??)

Aiyah be tolerant & courteous lah. You bus driver don’t be a bully. Just because you big, you come out suka-suka & stay in your lane please. Sometime I see ahh, this bus after come to bus lane from bus stop also want to go out other lane to go straight. Like that can make motorist angry you know. Give you special lane cannot stay. Now want to kacau other people lane.
And motorist you also cannot wait meh. Always want to fast fast fast. Let one bus in front of you so difficult is it. If one to be fast come out early lah. Be gracious, tolerance & courteous make you life better you know.

I had seen and experienced situation where giving way to buses moving out of bus bays ended up causing a bigger traffic congestion.

Although I do not disagree with this proposal, bus drivers need to cooperate and not act as the big bully.

For example, in situation where the left most lane leads to a traffic junction with a "left turn on red". If oncoming vehicles gives way to a bus out of the bus bay, this bus will hold back the left most traffic intending to turn left and the traffic junction ahead.

Perhaps in this situation, another yellow box is also needed on the second lane to allow buses to filter out and not occupying the left most lane.
